A "brat" in the Irish language translates to a mantle or cloak and brat Bhríde can refer to a piece of cloth representing Brigid. A goddess in ancient Ireland, an abbess in Kildare and a saint, Brigid has taken many guises over the ages. The Brigid's Cloak tradition involves embroidering Celtic spirals onto scarves, capes or material and it's a practice which has seen a resurgence with heightened interest in the legend of Brigid.
On Wednesday 6th February, Tallaght Library will host an event inviting participants from 8 years up, to come together and create Celtic swirls to add to their pre-loved scarves. Children (over 8) must be accompanied by an adult. All you need to do is bring along a scarf, ready for decorating and turning into your own Brat Bhríde.
My Brat Bhride is on in Tallaght Library on Wednesday 5th February from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free but booking is essential; tickets available here.
