Wondering what’s happening in your area this month? We’re looking at everything from food festivals to painting workshops in this month’s At a Glance with Glenveagh as we take a whistle-stop tour of what’s happening in Donabate. Buckle up as we dive into some of the events not to be missed in your community this June.
Are you a dab hand with a paintbrush? Or maybe you’re a complete novice when it comes to an easel, but want to learn? The Dublin Plein Air festival takes place from June 17 to June 23 inclusive with one day of the festival running in each of the following locations: Skerries Harbour, Donabate Strand, National Botanic Gardens, Martello Tower Balbriggan, Newbridge House and Farm, Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park and Ardgillan Castle in Balbriggan. It’s Ireland’s premier outdoor painting festival, with the name deriving from the French ‘en plein air’ to mean outdoor painting. Each day will include a talk from an artist before you embark on your personal painting masterpiece in a different stunning location each afternoon. Visit here for more information on when the festival lands in Donabate and how to get tickets. This event will sell out, so move fast!
A community is only as connected as the people in it, and the Donabate Community Fun Day hosted by the local Sea Scouts is the perfect opportunity to show support for the local area. Taking place in the Scout Den (just before the community centre), expect a fun day out for all the family with music, face painting and a barbecue. Activities include tug ‘o'war, swap shop, a jumble sale and a fancy dress competition. It’s the perfect time to meet some neighbours and see what Donabate is all about.
Fancy learning more about butterlies? Ireland’s leading butterfly expert Jesmond Harding is coming to Newbridge House to teach you all there is to know about butterflies. The day consists of a talk/presentation followed by a meander through the dense meadows in Newbridge to search for butterflies. You’ll come away from the day as a bona fide expert and able to identify all types of butterflies. The event is open to all ages and free of charge but booking is essential. Rounding off our list for June is the Flavours of Fingal festival. Taking place in the beautiful Newbridge House and Farm just outside the village, this is a showcase of the best food and drink to be found in Fingal. It’s about more than just the food though - with live music, family-friendly entertainment and artisanal craft stalls on offer, whatever you’re in the mood for, there’s something for everyone at the Flavours of Fingal.
As you can see, June is jam-packed with community events to enjoy - the hardest thing will be choosing how to divide your time between them all! Whether you go by yourself or with the whole family, get out there and enjoy everything Donabate has to offer!
