Wondering what’s happening in your area this month? We’re looking at everything from community singing events to storybook spooktaculars in this month’s At a Glance with Glenveagh as we take a whistle-stop tour of what’s happening in Donabate.
Whether you’re looking to stretch your vocal cords or simply take part in a wonderful evening of music and community, the monthly Tseac Singing Session events at the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre are for you. These events offer an informal space ‘where all participants are encouraged to perform and share traditional songs in a relaxed environment’. You can even participate online if you feel like it. This month’s special guest singer is Zoe Basha, whose music pulls from Appalachian, Occitan and Irish traditions and she uses polyphony as a way to interpret traditional songs.
This event will take place in the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre on the 17th of October. Vist their website for more information on booking tickets.
Whether you’re a foodie or just like learning about nature in Ireland, the Fingal Fungus Festival is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the ecosystem of your local area. On the beautiful grounds of Newbridge House and Farm in a Donabate there will be a mushroom hunt across Newbridge Demesne guided by mycologist Maria Cullen and Howard Fox of the National Botanic Gardens, followed by discussion and display of the fungi. There will also be detailed guidance on how to collect, cook and enjoy wild, edible, Irish mushrooms in safety.
The Fingal Fungus Festival takes place at Newbridge House and Farm from the 24th to the 25th October. Visit Fingal Fungus Festival - Events Fingal (eventsinfingal.ie) for more information.
With the kids no doubt getting excited about the trick-or-treating season, there’s no better way to feel festive with your little ones than to enjoy some spooky stories performed by The Princess of The Sea, Snowflake Sisters and Princess Of Adventure. The show will last for just over an hour, including an interval, with doors opening at 5.45pm, meaning there will be plenty of time to get the kids home for bed.
25% of ticket sales will also go to a good cause; the Hope for Zoe campaign, which is raising money for neuroblastoma maintenance therapy only available in the USA, for 2-year-old Zoe Mills.
The event happens in Fingallians GAA Club on the 26th October. Contact Fingallians on (01) 840 0125 for more information.
Naturally, we’ll be sticking with the theme of Halloween in this newsletter, and one of the best local options for families this month is at Newbridge House and Farm. The idyllic lodge will remake itself for the spooky season and offers a Ghostbusters Tour in the Haunted House, as well as a Spooky Trail at the Frightmare Farm. Kids can complete a questionnaire to get treats. There will also be a Witches Walled Garden and a Creepy Courtyard, so the entire grounds have essentially been set up for families to have fun this Halloween. Different parts of the experience are open at different times and you can find the full details here.
This event runs in Newbridge House and Farm from the 27th-31st October. Find our more here: facebook.com/NewbridgeHouseandFarm
