What better thing to do in Donabate than take an evening stroll on the beach? At over 2.5km long it's a great local resource and the perfect spot for a long or short stroll. The views from Donabate are great too, from a lovely views of the Howth Peninsula to Lambay Island and the Malahide Estuary.
Donabate has Blue Flag status, so a great place to swim. You'll also find some good surf as Donabate with surfers using the beach from September to April, when the conditions are more favourable for the sport.
Parking is free at Donabate Beach and there are toilet facilities. Dogs are also allowed as long as they are on a lead.
The cliff walk from Donabate to Portrane and back is simply stunning. Start out at Donabate's Shoreline Hotel; there is an entrance to the path right at the hotel. Follow the cliff path to the Martello Tower at Portrane, which dates from 1805. There are fantastic views along the way, taking in the Irish Sea and Lambay Island just off the coast. From craggy rocks, towers and mountains, not to mention the cliffs themselves, this is a really nice walk with lots of interest along the way.
It's 4km to Portrane and back from Donabate, so not too much of a hike for most people. Set aside at least an hour for your trip as you'll want to stop and take in the views. On your return to Donabate, it's really worth it to take a few minutes to round off your walk with a stroll along the beach.
Don't forget to bring a few layers of clothing as it can get breezy along the walk, but this shouldn't dull your spirits as the Donabate-Portrane cliff walk is definitely one of nicest coastal walks in the capital.
