Wondering what’s happening in your area this month? We’re looking at everything from farmer's markets to castle explorations in this month’s At a Glance with Glenveagh, as we take a whistle-stop tour of what’s happening in Leixlip.

Buckle up as we dive into some of the events not to be missed in your community this August.

Leixlip Farmer's Market

Located at St. Mary’s Church on Main Street, this farmer's market showcases some of the best food, plants and crafts from the town. You’ll find gorgeous fresh bread from Crean’s Place bakery and seafood from Faye’s Fish, among many other great food stalls. This is a newly-launched market, as the grand opening only took place in the first week of July. If sampling the best local produce sounds appealing, you can visit the market every Saturday between 9 and 1pm.

Wonderful Barn Open Day

The Wonderful Barn is a Leixlip landmark and national monument. On August 18th the Barn will open its doors to the public as part of National Heritage Week. There will be guided tours and talks on the day. The entrance to the Barn is found off the R404. For more information, contact Anthony at 0872128837 or arkinanto@gmail.com. The Open Day takes place from 12-5pm.

Baby and Toddler Time at Leixlip Library

This Baby & Toddler Time is a great way to get your young child out of the house and to get them playing with other babies and toddlers. Your child will enjoy a wide selection of toys to play with, as well as having a story or two read to them. Tea and coffee will be available for all parents in attendance. It’s a fantastic way to meet other parents from the area in a relaxed and casual setting while keeping the little ones amused. The event takes place every Friday from 10.00-11.30am and no booking is required.

Tours of Leixlip Castle

Leixlip Castle was built around 1172 by Adam de Hereford, who arrived with Strongbow to conquer Ireland as part of the Norman invasion. The castle was renovated in the mid-eighteenth century and again in 1837, leading to a fascinating blend of styles from its creation to more recent renovations. Leixlip Castle has been home to the Guinness family since 1958. You can take a tour of the home as part of National Heritage Week, in association with Historic Houses of Ireland. Tours will take place from the 17th to the 25th of August from 9.30am to 1.00pm each day. Booking is required for a tour and 01-6244430 is the number to call.

Hopefully August stays dry so you can make the most of some of these wonderful events taking place in Leixlip. There is always so much to explore and enjoy, so make the most of the long evenings while we still have them.
