Wondering what’s happening in your area this month? We’re looking at everything from lessons in building miniature dream homes to firework shows in this month’s At a Glance with Glenveagh as we take a whistle-stop tour of what’s happening in Balbriggan.

Design a Miniature Dream Home

How does a workshop that could teach your kids how to build a miniature model of their own dream home sound? As part of October’s Open House Dublin Festival of Architecture, Balbriggan Library is hosting a unique event for children from aged six and upwards, which will see artist Kim Jenkinson run a workshop to celebrate Open House Dublin Junior Weekend. Using a wide mix of materials, children will create their own miniature dream homes, spaces or places to play; the perfect way to spend an afternoon for any little artist or architect.

This workshop is happening from 2:00-3:00pm in Balbriggan Library from 2:00-3:00pm. For more information contact the library on 01 870 4401 or balbrigganlibrary@fingal.ie.

Balbriggan Pop-Up Museum

Get in touch with the history of your town by seizing the chance to visit the Balbriggan Pop-Up Museum. For one weekend, the museum will open beside The Central pub as part of the Fingal Festival of History. All are welcome to learn about the history of Balbriggan in this museum that ‘includes exhibitions of the people, places, and events, providing an insight into life in Balbriggan in times gone by’. Those with an interest in manufacturing and art will be especially interested in the museum’s displays of the many textile industries which thrived in Balbriggan and placed the town on the map. The museum will open on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of October, between midday and 5pm. Don’t miss it.

Halloween Fireworks

Residents of Balbriggan will have a front-row seat to the Fingal Festival of Fire this year, a series of Halloween Night events that includes a firework show at the town’s picturesque Bremore Castle. The historic tower house is worth a visit any day of the week, but seeing the 14th Century castle illuminated by fireworks this month will certainly be a unique experience. The firework show will kick off at 7.30pm and it will be preceded by a ‘Scary Concert’ — with families encouraged to wear costumes and bring torches.

Go Climbing at Mill Pond Park

After a relatively sunny September, we may finally be easing our way out of the summer weather and into a crisp autumn. On a clear day, however, why not head down to Mill Pond and check out the newly installed climbing blocks opposite the skate park? The BLOQX-brand climbing frames are ‘geometric shaped blocks that invite scalable climbing challenges and games, particularly for teenagers and older children'. The new blocks aren’t all that’s there to keep yourself fit - the callisthenics equipment installed earlier this summer might also be calling your name.
