We're taking a look back at our Construction Site Safety Talk given to the pupils of Midleton CBS Primary School.
Glenveagh’s long-term vision for the communities we serve starts with education. That’s why we actively engage with local schools in bringing construction site awareness to primary school children, giving them the tools they need to keep safe. Glenveagh Construction Site Safety Talks are a key part of our work in local communities, making sure we deliver a message to children that's important but engaging along the way.
Some of the tools Glenveagh use to bring construction site safety awareness to a younger audience are stories and visual cues that help bring safety to life. Enter Sam and Sue, a couple of friends eager to discover the areas around them. Our approach saw the creation of Sam and Sue Learn About Construction Site Safety, a book which is the result of Glenveagh innovation when it comes to engaging with primary school children. From finding out about potential dangers to seeing the safety measures on site, Glenveagh staff bring Sam and Sue to life in the classroom, all the while delivering a very important message.
The Glenveagh Site Safety talks help create awareness for children around construction sites, but also about understanding their built environment. From making sure they are visible when crossing the road to watching out for vehicles and staying clear from risks, they are given the tools to become more conscious of their surroundings and how to keep safe when out and about. The talks are about positive reinforcement of safety messages, while also making children aware of things not to do near construction sites. This is a vital part of engaging with local communities and the children who are part of them. Thanks to everyone at Midleton CBS Primary School for welcoming us in to talk about construction site safety.
One of the reasons Peter Morgan, Environment, Health and Safety Manager with Glenveagh loves his job is that he gets to deliver site safety talks to 3rd and 4th class primary students and "they are a great audience". This year he spent some time with the boys in Midleton CBS Primary School, helping them learn about construction site safety, keeping safe on their way to and from school along with more general safety tips for when they're outside playing.
Using learning tools developed by Glenveagh, Peter and his team deliver fun and engaging talks. This includes bringing the children through our book featuring Sam and Sue, who learn about how to be safe when they're near a construction site. Peter says that the talks are "a big part of what we do at Glenveagh. The students ask great questions and are really engaged with the talks, which is fantastic to see".
