Only a ten-minute drive from Portlaoise, the Rock of Dunamase is a must-see castle and fortress ruin.
There are few views like that from the ruins of Dunamase, where once stood the most important fortress in Laois and beyond. The stunning panoramic view not only provides a spectacular look at the surrounding countryside, but also a glimpse into the strategic importance of the site. An early Christian site attacked by Vikings in the 9th century, Dunamase became an Anglo-Norman stronghold. It was part of the dowry that Aoife, daughter of the king of Leinster, gave Strongbow on the occasion of their marriage. The castle passed hands a few times over the centuries before being destroyed during Cromwell's invasion of Ireland in 1650, rumoured to have been beset by explosives.
Today the castle and its ruins are still worth visiting; a great place to bring children for exploring and the views are worth the short drive from Portlaoise.
The Rock of Dunamase is just a ten-minute drive along the N80, from the centre of Portlaoise. There is a small car park, which is free and the walk around the castle and ruins is easy. On a good evening the sunsets are wonderful!
