Trim Castle is the largest existing Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Built in the 12th century, it was constructed at the site of an important crossing point of the River Boyne. The seat of the de Lacy family, the original wooden structure was razed to the ground by Rory O'Connor, King of Connacht and last High King of Ireland. So began the rebuilding, but this time in stone, with most of what you see today completed by 1220. Over the centuries the castle has passed hands from French crusading knights to the Duke of York, before being seized as a royal property. In 1993 the last owner, Lord Dunsany sold the castle to the state and major restoration works took place, before it was opened to the public in 2000.
A guided tour of Trim Castle is something you won't regret. Its tour guides are known for their wealth of knowledge on the history of the castle and its importance in terms of heritage. They also relate great stories and myths as they bring you throughout the site and up to the roof! From its prime as a strategic mark on the map to its role in Hollywood blockbusters, you'll find everything you need to know from expert guides.
Trim Castle is open all year round; at weekends during the winter months, but from the middle of February to the end of September, it's open to visitors seven days a week. It's great value too, with adult tickets €5 and only €3 for children and that includes a guided tour of the keep. The grounds are free to walk around, but you really cannot beat the guided tour.
Parking nearby is from €1 per hour and there is all-day parking close to the castle from as little as €3.
